|
| Lake
Michigan - The
word "Michigan"
was originally used to
refer to the lake itself,
and is believed to come
from the Ojibwa Indian
word mishigami,
meaning "great
water."
This
is the only one of the
Great Lakes wholly within
the borders of the United
States; the others are
shared with Canada. It is
bounded, in a clockwise
direction from the south,
by the U.S. states of
Indiana, Illinois,
Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Lake Michigan - Scenic Beauty
The Lake Michigan coast is one of the world's most beautiful shorelines, encompassing some of the top beaches on the Great Lakes. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure with sand dunes to climb, big cities to visit, pristine waters to sail, swim and explore, postcard-perfect sunsets to enjoy and let's not forget about the fishing...
For the avid sport fisherman, Lake Michigan provides some of the best fishing for steelhead, coho salmon, perch, chinook salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and walleye in the entire US Midwest.

| While on the water you're sure to come across one of the many lighthouses that decorate the coastline. These historic beacons have
sheltered ships from shoals and rocks since the early 1830's. While navigational technology has advanced many of the lights still guide ships through treacherous waters. Others have been abandoned and fallen victim to vandalism, yet several are open to the public with a few including museums. Rather than a lighthouse, the shimmering of lights on the water off of Lake Michigan's western coast is more likely to be
from the many
lakefront buildings in
the magnificent city of Chicago. With a waterfront of over 29 miles, there are several marinas and facilities to dock your boat around one of America's largest and
favorite cities.

| Although they are geographically distinct, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are geologically and hydrologically the same body of water. (Sometimes called Lake Michigan-Huron) Counted together, it is the largest fresh water body in the world by surface area. The Mackinac Bridge in upper Michigan is generally considered the dividing line between the two lakes.
